This is a bit of oversimplification, but a lesson I’ve learnt the hard way.
Bad product + no hype = Dead
Bad product + hype = Dead after sometime
Good product + no hype = Slow take off, might die
Good product + hype = Rocketship
The hype could be generated by the company itself and / or its initial community of users and / or getting lucky with a viral moment.
This assumes that there is a sensible & scalable business model for the product as well. Without a good business model, the product will also be dead after sometime.
